Winestyr Review

This unique blend showcases the ripe, smoky nature of Syrah with the depth and ink of Tannat. Jammy black fruits and freshly cracked black pepper, curing spices and cinnamon. A truly outstanding wine that gives new life to a classic, possibly forgotten appellation: Los Angeles. 22 months in French oak, 60% new

What We Love

  • Los Angeles County Syrah!
  • Intense aromatics
  • Heritage variety Tannat

Experience

Byron Blattey Wines is a love letter to Los Angeles County, both new and old, where vines used to line the banks of the LA River in the late 1800s. Prohibition and vine disease wiped out most of those plantings but thanks to producers like Byron Blattey Wines that others who champion the region, small family-owned vineyards are making a comeback. Mark and Jenny Blattey founded the winery in 2014 in their hometown and quickly began sourcing fruit from the top vineyard sites in the region. Together with Steve Lemley and Nate Hasper on the winemaking side, they are producing wines of both aromatic and textural power from grapes like Syrah and even Tannat. The wines are stylish without being flashy and above all, distinctly Los Angeles.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself. Need some specific recommendations? Chat us in the lower right box or send our lead curator an email at bob@winestyr.com.
