Varietal Pinot Noir

Vintage 2012

Winestyr Review

This is a wonderful Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir for the uninitiated. This wine is exemplary of why Pinot Noir turns out so well in cooler climates. Great acidity and bright, yet restrained fruit layer in with earthy and stony flavors ultimately finishing with some well integrated spice and oak. This is an elegant wine with loads of complexity and flavor - a real treat of a wine and a great value at $40. When I visited proprietor Bill Hunter and he showed me around his winery - before I had ever even tasted his wines - I could just tell that his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay bottlings would really be stand outs. Bill is old school and meticulous when it comes to the quintessential Burgundy varietals. He handpicks everything from the clones and vineyards he works with to the barrels and winemaking tools he uses. The results are nothing short of wonderful - very expressive wines that truly put Sonoma on the map as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay's second home outside of Burgundy.

Chasseur Wines

Chasseur (French for "Hunter") is dedicated to small lot, hand-crafted wines in the old French tradition with emphasis on vineyard designates. Their small size (about 2,700 cases per year) allows complete control over the winemaking process, enabling them to produce the finest wines the fruit has to offer. They are in an obsessive pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay's final, and possibly finest, frontier - Sonoma's "West County". Still in its renaissance, this area is composed of the western edge of the Russian River Valley and beyond, known as the "true" Sonoma Coast. The wines are as expressive as they are stunning. Burgundy lovers won't want to miss Chasseur.
