Vista Luna is known for its cobbled, rocky soil and the cooling breezes which blow from the Delta to the Sierras. The grapes were gently whole cluster pressed and barrelled down to neutral barrels. The wine fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and no temperature manipulation. Malolactic is arrested with SO2 to preserve freshness and the wine spent 8 months on primary lees with no stirring.
Since 2008, Ferdinand proprietor and winemaker, Evan Frazier, has had the opportunity to work for the Kongsgaard family. With their encouragement and support, he started Ferdinand in 2010. Though his first experience in winemaking was in France, it was in the Cathar and Catalan country, just across the Pyrenees from Spain, so the grapes he worked with were Grenache and Carignan. Setting out to make his own wines, he looked again towards Spain and was fortunate to be introduced to two great growers of Spanish varieties. In Ferdinand's first vintage, Evan started with just one ton of Albariño from Markus Bokisch’s Vista Luna Vineyard. In 2011, he began to make Tempranillo with fruit from Ann Kraemer’s famed Shake Ridge Ranch. Evan is a rising star in the wine world and we're excited to offer his wines to you.
