While there seems to be a movement in Italy's Piedmont region to make Barbera a more serious affair by layering it with new oak and extracting as much color and density as possible, that's the opposite of what Alison Thompson has done here. This shows off Barbera's grace, the crunchy blue-fruited nature of the grape that can be delicate and packed with flavor at the same time. LePiane continues to release natural wines made from Italian varieties that redefine how these grapes could succeed in California.

L.A. LePiane Wines

Named after her great grandfather who left Italy to settle in Hollister, Alison Thompson founded L.A. LePiane in 2013. But her predisposition for the craft began much earlier, as she studied biology and Italian at UC Santa Barbara before studying abroad in Siena, Italy for a semester. Her obsession with Italian food and wine was no passing fad, and while pursuing her master's in viticulture at UC Davis, she jumped back across the pond for a chance to make wine in Barolo. And thus, her love affair with Nebbiolo was born.
