This is a truly exceptional red wine. Impeccable balance and age-worthy structure make this wine, from one of Napa's best vintages in recent memory, a wise cellar selection. Because of it's depth, balance, and grace, this wine is drinking beautifully right now, but be sure to decant because the nuances and subtleties really start to show once the wine gets some air. Aged in 50% new French oak (Taransaud and Bossuet), and 50% older French oak barrels. The wine was given 20 months of elevage (aging in barrel). 56 percent Merlot, 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 percent Cabernet franc, 2 percent Malbec, and 2 percent Petit verdot. 370 cases produced.
Steve Matthiasson, who got his start as a heralded vineyard manager, and his wife, Jill Klein Matthiasson, an ivy league educated botanist, have become a formidable duo in the world of winemaking. The critical acclaim for their approach to farming, as well as their winemaking, and wines, seems to have no bounds. The list is too long to include here, but some of the highlights include recognition from the James Beard Foundation and winemaker of the year honors from California wine guru Jon Bonné of the San Francisco Chronicle.
