Consistently one of our absolute favorite wines, this vintage of the Rocky Hill proprietary red is one of the best to date. Medium-bodied with, with dusty tannins, and impressive depth and complexity, this is a wine drinker's wine. Plush dark berry flavors, notes of tobacco, well-integrated oak, and great structure make this wine as enjoyable with food as it is without. Made by Don Van Staaveren who has a Wine Spectator "Wine of the Year" to highlight his long list of winemaking accolades. 36% Malbec, 36% Merlot, 28% Syrah. 91pts from Wine Spectator, 91pts from Wine Enthusiast.
Rocky Hill was one of Winestyr's first winery clients, and their proprietary red wine is one of my personal favorite wines year after year. I didn't have a chance to meet proprietor Lucas Heldfond until November of 2014 when had a quick drink (of sparkling water) at The Battery in San Francisco. During that convo, we quickly chatted about San Francisco, entrepreneurship, the wine biz, and bbq (smoked brisket to be exact). I asked Lucas how he gets access to fruit from the famous Richard Dinner Vineyard in the Sonoma Mountain AVA. His response? "Actually, my family has owned the land for years - Richard Dinner was my grandfather." The wines reflect the terroir, or, more specifically, climate of the incredible place from whence they were grown. This property is much more than a vineyard although the fruit is sought after by the likes of Paul Hobbs. The wines are superb and impeccably balanced exemplifying the modest nature of the proprietor himself.
Located on beautiful Sonoma Mountain, Rocky Hill Farm has been enjoyed and cared for by four generations. It is a magical place covered with magnificent oak trees scattered along a pristine hillside with a rugged and rocky terrain. Rocky Hill has set out to create approachable wines with structure and balance, not overpowered by oak, without overwhelming fruit, and that serve as a compliment to a well-prepared meal. Their 2008 Proprietary Red Blend is simply stunning.More from this winery
Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
