The 10-acre Wentzel Vineyard is just outside of Philo in the heart of Anderson Valley. Waits-Mast's fruit comes from the highest portion of the vineyard, called "the clos" because of the fenced in block being reminiscent of Burgundy's famed walled vineyards. Only whole berries were fermented here and the wine spent 16 months in 25% new French oak barrels. Get your hands on this allocation of micro-production (only 90 cases made) wine from a storied vineyard as soon as possible.
Before they started to make wine, Brian and Jennifer were passionate wine consumers, spending many weekends exploring small wineries all over California and beyond. After years of research in books and afield, they crafted their first barrel of Pinot Noir in 2005. Pleased with the results, they continued the following year. Their shift from wine geeks to winemakers quickly eschewed Waits-Mast to cult-like status in the world of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. With too many accolades to name, the wines precede themselves.
