Winestyr Review

This pure and focused Chardonnay from Alder Springs Vineyard is on the lighter side and drinks well on its own or paired with lighter foods. Wines from this Mendocino vineyard have made it on the wine list at The French Laundry in Yountville and Alder Springs also supplies fruit to some of the best winemakers in the country for a variety of projects. A very well made Chardonnay with amazing fruit. This wine is a great value.

Experience

Stuart Bewley grew up in California's central valley, where hard work and farming were a part of life. But his name will be forever tied to the beverage that embodied The Beach. While in their twenties, Stuart and his high school friend Michael Crete experimented with mixing wine and fruit juices. They ended up inventing the wine cooler, and the iconic California Cooler brand. Within four years they went from selling cases out of the back of a pickup truck to a multi-million dollar business. When Stuart was in his early thirties, they sold California Cooler and he moved on to a new challenge. Going back to his farming roots, he immersed himself in the study of viticulture. His seven year search for the perfect site ended with Alder Springs ranch. He bought Alder Springs ranch and broke ground in 1993, planting his first vineyard block. Today, Stuart meticulously thins his grapes with a "bonsai" method. While his yield-per-acre is significantly below the industry average, the resulting quality of the grapes is of the finest in California.

Winery

Alder Springs Vineyard is known for producing exceptional fruit, specifically focusing on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Rhone red and white varietals. Arnot-Roberts, Pax, Kale Wines, Copain, Relic, Sojourn, Bedrock Wine Co, and Dirty & Rowdy are among the notable producers who purchase fruit from Alder Springs Vineyard which vouches for the quality of fruit being grown on Alder Springs' 6,000 acre ranch (only about 140 acres are planted) in Northern Mendocino, just 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean and ranging from 1,700 to 2,700 feet of elevation. We've gotten access to some very special allocations of their wines and are excited to make them available to you through Winestyr.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself. Need some specific recommendations? Chat us in the lower right box or send our lead curator an email at bob@winestyr.com.
