Varietal Pinot Noir

Vintage 2012

Winestyr Review

This is a beautifully made Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir made by Bill Hunter of Chasseur. This wine made from the cooler climate coastal vineyards in Western Sonoma county exudes some very Burgundian qualities while also delivering the fruit notes that has made Sonoma a true Pinot Noir mecca. Aged in French Oak, this wine has great balance and is elegant and substantial at the same time. I love this wine because it isn't trying to be something it isn't. Many of the new producers are overdoing the "lean, low alcohol" thing and the resulting wines tend to be somewhat underwhelming. Bill Hunter is a hell of a winemaker and this wine truly echoes the fruit, vineyards, and clones he works with.

Chasseur Wines

Chasseur (French for "Hunter") is dedicated to small lot, hand-crafted wines in the old French tradition with emphasis on vineyard designates. Their small size (about 2,700 cases per year) allows complete control over the winemaking process, enabling them to produce the finest wines the fruit has to offer. They are in an obsessive pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay's final, and possibly finest, frontier - Sonoma's "West County". Still in its renaissance, this area is composed of the western edge of the Russian River Valley and beyond, known as the "true" Sonoma Coast. The wines are as expressive as they are stunning. Burgundy lovers won't want to miss Chasseur.
