Winestyr Review

This is a bright, creamy, and complex Chardonnay from the Haynes vineyard in Napa Valley's Coombsville AVA. Bursting with delectable flavors of lemon curd, fresh brioche, wet river stone, and a hint of tropical fruit, this is a killer Chardonnay that is powerful and layered, but also elegant and balanced. This is another great example of a wine that will turn haters back onto this wonderful grape variety. A terrific effort from acclaimed winemaker John Lockwood. Fermented with native yeast. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 100 cases produced.

What We Love

  • Powerful, yet elegant
  • Critically acclaimed

This is an absolutely outstanding Chardonnay from the Haynes Vineyard in Napa Valley's Coombsville AVA.

Experience

Climb the old oak tree in the middle of the Haynes Vineyard and you have a direct line of sight across San Pablo Bay to Mt. Tamalpais on the other side. On cool mornings the marine level sinks down into the Coombsville Bowl and doesn’t break up until the afternoon, creating the mildest growing season in the Napa Valley. The vines are planted in deep, alluvial, cobblestone soil ideal for root penetration. Below the topsoil a layer of powdery, white volcanic ash stores tiny amounts of moisture allowing the fruit to maintain tremendous acidity and develop an elegant and refined tannin structure. Haynes produces classic, age-worthy wines of fruit and minerality.

Winery

John Lockwood got his start in the California wine industry in 2004 working up at Heron Lake vineyard. He went on to work harvests at Littorai, Bodega Melipal in Argentina, and Failla Wines where he worked for 5 years farming and managing the Sonoma Coast and Russian River estate vineyards. He started Enfield Wine Co. in 2010 as small side-project while still working at Failla, and in 2013 Enfield became a full time project. Driven by soil first, Enfield seeks out vineyards that possess a distinct and powerful sense of place – across region, grape variety, and vine age. Working with small vineyards and independent growers, every step of the process is guided by the intent to maximize this character of terroir. Grapes are harvested for balance and the wines are all given the chance to ferment naturally. The wines have been met with serious critical acclaim and we're excited to have them in the Winestyr portfolio.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
