In 1978, after searching several years for a vineyard site suitable for elegant but powerful, age-worthy Bordelaise grape varieties, Ric Forman found his home at the base of Howell Mountain. His wine journey started years before and included stops at several of the valley’s most historic estates. Still, his estate wines established his legacy all on their own thanks to nearly 40 years of consistent acclaim from the most respected wine critics in the world.
The Forman estate sits on Big Rock Road and overlooks the quaint mid-valley town of St. Helena. To plant his vineyard, Ric used 200 sticks of dynamite to blow out what had been a weary orchard, exposing beautiful hillside soils underneath the top layer of bedrock. Ric also carved out one of the most impressive cellars in the country as it sits next to his vineyard’s lower block and more than fifty feet underneath his driveway!
