After biding his time at California’s iconic Paso Robles winery, Tablas Creek, the Elwell’s took the domestic wine scene by storm, producing wines from one grape and one grape only: Cabernet Franc. It wasn’t just the wines of France’s Loire Valley that influenced their devotion to the grape but Tyler’s early discovery of what more moderate climates on the West Coast could accomplish with it. In addition to their very drinkable California appellation bottling, they also produce single-vineyard expressions and Blanc of Cabernet Franc that is simply irresistible.
After watching the Templeton Gap in Paso Robles produce more restrained and elegant grapes, Tyler knew that he had to go searching all across the state to find other spots doing something similar. The likes of Barsotti and Alder Springs vineyards were doing just that, further validating the Halcyon mission.
