This is the holy grail of Carignan in California, original rootstocks planted in the 1890s under the shadow of Mount Diablo. These vines never got hit my phylloxera and consistently produce incredible fruit year after year. In this wine, there's an untamed nature, in the best of ways, with plenty of fruit and earth to announce its complexity. The wine has a spicy, savory finish.
Winemakers Jack Roberts (Matthiasson Wines Assistant Winemaker) and Johanna Jensen (formerly with Scholium Project and Broc Cellars) have come together to create wines influenced by the old world with less ripe fruit, minimal manipulation and great ageability. In the vigneron tradition, they do much of the work themselves from vineyard to bottling.
