This is unequivocally one of the best wine values I've come across in the past few years. James Beard award winner, and author of "The Wine Bible," Karen McNeill, said it perfectly when she gave this wine 90pts and said it was "like a man's summer suit - manly, yet capable of being worn lightly." This wine is just that and incredibly enjoyable to drink. This should be a strong candidate for your house red, it will be mine. 90pts Wine Spectator. 2,998 cases produced.
"Over the years, we have worked closely with half a dozen vineyards to insure that we have fine, ripe and balanced fruit. We have focused on vineyards located entirely in the North Coast appellation of California, with emphasis on Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and Lake County. When we began our exploration of Cabernet Franc, we set out with the goal to present a wine that was ‘true to type’, or in wine-speak, a wine that showed ‘typicity’ – boldly saying Cabernet Franc! Our exploration, in progress for nearly two decades, brings us to the rows of many vineyards in very diverse growing conditions. We have focused on vineyards to the north of us (north of Napa Valley that is) in the hills of Lake County. We have found growers who are passionate about growing grapes for us that express the varietal typicity we seek for our Cabernet Franc. Expanding our search to Mendocino, we apply this same exacting criteria for varietal expression to our Chenin Blanc." - Lang & Reed
Tracey & John Skupny started Lang & Reed Wine Company in 1996 with the goal to explore the distinct charms of Cabernet Franc and to craft wines that are both expressive and enjoyable to drink. During their wine ‘foundation’ years, the they became intrigued by the magnitude of distinction Cabernet Franc held from notable wine regions in France: Loire Valley and Bordeaux. The Skupnys set out to produce a Cabernet Franc that was ‘true to type’, redolent in aroma, and pure in flavor with, structure and balance. Their journey has been a smashing success as they are widely held as one of the original and absolute best producers of domestic Cabernet Franc. We're very proud to have their wines in the Winestyr portfolio.More from this winery
Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself. Every time I try a wine that is new to me, it is an adventure. This wine is very approachable, delicious, and solid. The wine has a nice round, take your time to slowly "sip me" flavor. This adventure ended with my search for the order form so I could get more!
