Winestyr Review

This is an impeccable Cabernet Franc that shows the depth, complexity, and grace typical to its Loire Valley counterparts, but with the power and intensity of fruit that can only come from Napa Valley. Precise and balanced, with the structure to develop in the cellar for 7+ years, this is truly one of my favorite wines we have worked with (I am, admittedly, a glutton for high quality Cabernet Franc). Aged for 16 months in French oak. 93pts Wine Spectator, 92pts Wine Enthusiast. 849 cases produced.

What We Love

  • Old world balance, with new world power
  • Critically acclaimed

This is a great example of what domestic Cabernet Franc can achieve when great fruit is put in the hands of a great winemaker.

Experience

"Over the years, we have worked closely with half a dozen vineyards to insure that we have fine, ripe and balanced fruit. We have focused on vineyards located entirely in the North Coast appellation of California, with emphasis on Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and Lake County. When we began our exploration of Cabernet Franc, we set out with the goal to present a wine that was ‘true to type’, or in wine-speak, a wine that showed ‘typicity’ – boldly saying Cabernet Franc! Our exploration, in progress for nearly two decades, brings us to the rows of many vineyards in very diverse growing conditions. We have focused on vineyards to the north of us (north of Napa Valley that is) in the hills of Lake County. We have found growers who are passionate about growing grapes for us that express the varietal typicity we seek for our Cabernet Franc. Expanding our search to Mendocino, we apply this same exacting criteria for varietal expression to our Chenin Blanc." - Lang & Reed

Winery

Tracey & John Skupny started Lang & Reed Wine Company in 1996 with the goal to explore the distinct charms of Cabernet Franc and to craft wines that are both expressive and enjoyable to drink. During their wine ‘foundation’ years, the they became intrigued by the magnitude of distinction Cabernet Franc held from notable wine regions in France: Loire Valley and Bordeaux. The Skupnys set out to produce a Cabernet Franc that was ‘true to type’, redolent in aroma, and pure in flavor with, structure and balance. Their journey has been a smashing success as they are widely held as one of the original and absolute best producers of domestic Cabernet Franc. We're very proud to have their wines in the Winestyr portfolio.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
