Diego and Shaunt have one of the most unique winery setups in the country, if not the world. Tucked into the hills above Orinda, which is just a few minutes outside of Oakland, this duo crafts their flagship natural wines in the raised basement of Shaunt’s family home. That’s right, they lifted the house to make sure the cellar (er...basement) had room for their barrel stacks. It’s a true bootstrap operation but one that has yielded incredible wines beloved by natural wine enthusiasts.
Whereas Populis could be considered the more glou-glou, entry level wines from this dynamic duo, Les Lunes is their flagship label. These are most often varietal wines (or classic blends like Cabernet and Merlot) coming from single vineyard sites that have that little extra “something” to them. Black Vineyard in Coombsville has become one of the most celebrated sites for Merlot in California and much of it because Diego and Shaunt have transformed the farming. Some of the premier names in California are now working with the fruit, but we always go back to the Les Lunes example first.
