Winestyr Review

This Zinfandel is surprising light and aromatic - more in the style of Pinot Noir than Zinfandel. Because of the light and fruit-forward nature of this wine, I think this is a wonderful wine for Pinot Noir lovers to try. I rarely call a wine lovely, but that's what this wine is. Extremely balanced and easy-drinking, this wine is more along the lines of some of the lower alcohol wines we've seen taking favor with the new guard of wine-drinkers.

What We Love

  • Light and floral with some pepper and spice
  • Very food-friendly
  • Organic

This is a great wine if you're looking to branch out from Pinot Noir and prefer something organic - delicate and floral.

McFadden Farm is an amazing place founded by an amazing man by the name of Guinness McFadden. The farm generates all of its own power and actually gives back to the grid thanks to sustainable energy sources. All the fruit is organically grown which is becoming Mendocino's trademark. If you get a chance to visit the tasting room in Hopland, CA (about 45 minutes North of Santa Rosa), make sure to tell John Cesano we sent you. Don't forget to grab lunch or dinner (and beers) at the Hopland Tap House which is two doors down - it's one of the coolest pubs in Northern California.

With names like Guinness and Jameson McFadden, it might seem odd that this family ended up in the wine business. However, over the years, McFadden's grapes have represented a significant portion of many award winning wines in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties. Unlike many organic farms, McFadden Vineyard was organic from the very beginning. These wines are made from organically grown grapes - meaning that at no time were any chemical fertilizers or pesticides ever used in the production of the grapes in McFadden's wines.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
