By all accounts, the 2011 vintage was a tough growing season in Napa Valley, but many of the wines I've tasted from the vintage are more interesting and nuanced than some of the other vintages. This wine is no different and I found myself very intrigued with the flavors that are highlighted by cherry cola, tobacco, spice, and some dried herbs and bell pepper. This is a fuller bodied Merlot and owes some of its complexity to Cabernet Franc. 77% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc.
A Napa Valley mainstay, Monticello Vineyards is proud to be family owned and operated. The winery is now managed by its second generation of Corleys, sons Kevin, Chris, and Stephen. Their overriding philosophy is that great wines are made in the vineyards. While much of Napa Valley has gone the way of luxury brands promoting some sort of lifestyle over the substance of their wines, Monticello remains steadfast in the exact opposite mindset. Here it is about the vineyards and wine, that’s it.
