Winestyr Review

This Syrah is just loaded with dark smashed berry flavors. Blackberry, espresso, spice, and smoke dominate the palate with just a hint of green pepper. This is a nice wine for anyone who likes to fire up the grill or sit by the fire with a deep, dark glass of red. 18 Months in 100% New Oak (50% French / 50% Virginian).

What We Love

  • Deep, dark, and masculine
  • Powerful fruit flavors

The 2011 Monticello Estate Grown Syrah is a perfect wine for anyone who likes to grill or get a fire going in the fireplace - preferably with matches and kindling.

Experience

I was first introduced to Stephen Corley by an old friend whose fraternity had a local alumni reunion at which Stephen was serving Monticello's wines. My friend was so impressed that he insisted we consider adding Monticello to our site, and quickly put me in touch with Stephen. We began working with Monticello shortly thereafter and have been impressed by the high standards they maintain throughout every aspect of their operation ever since.

Winery

A Napa Valley mainstay, Monticello Vineyards is proud to be family owned and operated. It was founded in 1970 by Jay Corley, and the winery is now managed by his sons, Kevin, Chris, and Stephen. Their overriding philosophy is that great wines are made in the vineyards. Monticello now farms five vineyards in the Napa Valley focusing on producing high quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Chardonnay. If you're ever in Napa make sure to stop by their amazing property...you might just mistake it for the real Monticello.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself. Need some specific recommendations? Chat us in the lower right box or send our lead curator an email at bob@winestyr.com.
