In the years since founding Piedrasassi, Sashi Moorman has become internationally recognized for his efforts at Sandhi, Evening Land, and Domaine de La Cote but it was his devotion to Syrah that marked his beginnings. Serving as the winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards for 15 years before heading out on his own, Sashi is among the New World’s most accomplished devotees to the grape.
At Piedrasassi, the mission is craft wines that reflect their origins (Bien Nacido Vineyard, anyone?) with a clear nod to Old World producers that so clearly influenced Sashi early on. Santa Barbara County may enjoy a more widespread and accepted reputation for smokey, spicy, and uncious Syrah now, but that is because of wines made by the likes of Sashi in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
