This is one of the most expensive white wines being made on California's Central Coast, and when you consider the fact that it's a dead ringer for very high quality Chablis, it's actually a darn good value. This is not your typical California Chardonnay by any stretch of the imagination, and that's what makes it so good. Pure and mineral-driven, with lemon curd and a hint of baking spices, this wine has laser-focused layers of flavor that will keep you coming back for more and is in the perfect drinking window right now. 95pts from Wine Enthusiast, 92pts from Robert Parker.
At the southwestern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills is the awe-inspiring Bentrock vineyard. Part of the “Four Corners” of the appellation, this north-facing block sits at an elevation of 250 to 500 feet and is blasted daily by cold ocean winds. From the upper reaches of Bentrock, one can see the other Sandhi vineyard sites to the east. While a young site (planted 2007), Bentrock shows incredible potential, delivering intensely concentrated and sublime fruit. We believe that Bentrock’s proximity to the ocean and exposed orientation creates a perfect environment for low-yielding grapes of exceptional quality.
Sandhi is a small production California winery focusing on select vineyards from the Sta. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. Sandhi was founded in 2010 by Rajat Parr, the wine director for Michael Mina Restaurants, and winemaker, Sashi Moorman. Sandhi represents a union essential to the production of wine: the collaboration between man, earth, and vine. The willing participation of all three elements is necessary to make great wine, and the winegrower must make this collaboration rich and nourishing for all involved. An understanding of these joint efforts informs Sandhi’s exploration of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines throughout the Santa Barbara County terroir.More from this winery
Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
