This is a project founded by Tess Perliss and Aaron Pott to celebrate one of California's true treasures, Zinfandel. Tess and Aaron met when, in 2007, Aaron came to the Perliss family estate in Calistoga and convinced them to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on the family's empty pasture. From there, he took over winemaking operations on what has become one of the northern valley's most respected estates. Wingspan is focused on Zinfandel in both red and rosé styles.
Through an exploration of a 120-year-old vineyard, Wingspan produces Zinfandel of intensity and depth. The Del Barba Ranch vineyard is its home. The vineyard sits at the base of Mount Diablo about 35 miles east of San Francisco and is dry farmed organically. What else? The vineyard is still on its original rootstocks, having withstood Prohibition and phylloxera, making it not only a historic site for Zinfandel, but one of tremendous quality.
