The Barbera being grown in Amador County are really impressing me. Rich, lush, and approachable, this wine has great acid and finesse. This is one of those wines that you can serve at a dinner party and everyone will be asking you what it is - and at $28, you can't go wrong.
After a long day visiting the phenomenal wineries in up and coming Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, during which we were about 15 minutes later to each subsequent winery visit, we entered the second gate (this one for deer) high above the surrounding areas at Shake Ridge Ranch - only about 2 hours late. From the moment we entered, we knew we were in a very special place. Proprietor Ann Kraemer took us on an ATV tour of all of her blocks of different plantings and pointed to certain rows telling us which winery they were going to (along with laughing about the wineries who wanted to pick too early too keep alcohol levels low). After the ATV tour, we tasted the Yorba lineup of wines while watching the sun set over Shake Ridge Ranch. Each wine truly blew us away during that very memorable experience and we're very excited to offer the Yorba wines as part of our collection. For wine enthusiasts, a visit to Shake Ridge Ranch should be one of the highest priorities on your list. Scott and I couldn't stop raving about it all the way until our next stop at a pizza joint in Lodi, CA where we had to eat our food on the liftgate of the pickup truck because the place was closing - fun times and a great experience.
Yorba Wines is the house brand of the Kraemer family, the proprietors and winegrowers of Shake Ridge Ranch. Shake Ridge Ranch is a magical place high up in the hills of Amador County and the fruit - Syrah, Tempranillo, Barbera, Zinfandel, and a few others - are highly, highly sought after. 80% of the yearly production is sold to the likes of Favia, Keplinger, Forlorn Hope, Gallica, Tribute to Grace, and Dirty and Rowdy. 20% of the production is kept for the Yorba line of wines and they are completely stunning. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the ranch itself, the people behind it, and the wines.More from this winery
Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
