Winestyr Review

As you might expect, Coquerel's 2012 Petite Sirah is one large wine. The color is nearly black, an indicator of the underlying depth and concentration. The nose is dark and ripe with tons of earth and spice. While it is powerful, there is still a sense of elegance to this wine. Aged for 26 months in French oak. Only 459 cases produced.

As serious wine lovers for more than three decades, Clay and Brenda Cockerell have travelled extensively throughout the great appellations of Europe and sampled everything from simple, honest regional bottlings to some of the world’s most celebrated wines. Years ago, while visiting the Napa Valley, we decided the time was right to make our own wines. Coquerel was born. In 2005, they purchased a vineyard in Calistoga planted to old-vine, dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc. In 2008 Clay and Brenda acquired the adjacent site that was planted to a handful of traditional varieties rarely found in modern-day Napa. Since then, they have revamped, replanted and upgraded the property to luxury-class winegrowing standards.

With the 2005 purchase of their first estate vineyard, Coquerel Family Wine Estates began producing exceptional Napa Valley red and white wines under the guiding hand of winemaker Christine Barbe, who earned her Ph.D in 1996 from the Bordeaux Institute of Enology. The winery is located just beyond the town of Calistoga at the north end of the Napa Valley and the heart and soul of Coquerel Wines is their estate “Walnut Wash” vineyard, a gorgeous, oak-studded property that sits in the afternoon shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains. Pure, crisp whites and powerful, yet sophisticated, reds have become their hallmark; a true melding of Napa Valley intensity and French elegance.

Where are the ratings?

Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself. Need some specific recommendations? Chat us in the lower right box or send our lead curator an email at bob@winestyr.com.
