The Halcyon 2019 Camino Alto Cabernet Franc is just a fantastic expression of what this grape can achieve in high altitude, farming-first situations. Aromatically delineated between huckleberry, savory herbs, and spice, the wine is incredibly structured on the palate. Between the brief grip and cooling acidity, it shows off a complexity that is often lost among examples of Cab Franc slathered in new oak and overripe fruit sets. The wine is frankly delicious and calls for a variety of pairings, but we recommend bibimbap or short ribs.
After biding his time at California’s iconic Paso Robles winery, Tablas Creek, the Elwell’s took the domestic wine scene by storm, producing wines from one grape and one grape only: Cabernet Franc. It wasn’t just the wines of France’s Loire Valley that influenced their devotion to the grape but Tyler’s early discovery of what more moderate climates on the West Coast could accomplish with it. In addition to their very drinkable California appellation bottling, they also produce single-vineyard expressions and Blanc of Cabernet Franc that is simply irresistible.
