This is another exceptional wine from Oregon's Ovum Wines. Ranked as one of Wine & Spirits Magazine's top 100 wineries in the world in 2018, husband and wife team John and Ksenija house produce tiny lots of impeccable white wines with fruit from some of the most remote vineyards in Oregon. Fuller-bodied, with notes of citrus wrapped around a salty, mineral core, you'll be rewarded by letting this wine open up over the course of hours, and potentially days. This wine has great structure and so many layers of complexity that it rivals some of the exalted white wines of Germany. Like it's German and Austrian counterparts, this wine has the potential to develop with age for many, many years. 161 cases produced. 95pts and Editor's Choice from Wine Enthusiast.
Each Ovum wine is made in the exact same way. Their low intervention production method is a commitment to letting each vintage and vineyard come through, for better or worse. Native ferments, no subtractions or additions, except for small amounts of SO2 - and extended lees contact for 8-9 months, which lends textural complexity. All of this is done in neutral barrels of acacia and oak, as well as cement egg. The nuances and subtleties of the resulting wines are owed exclusively to the terroir from whence they came. Drinking an Ovum wine is like listening to AM Radio, in Stereo.
Founded in 2011 by John House and Ksenija Kostic House, Ovum was born out of the realization that Riesling in Oregon has similar qualities one would find in world class growing regions. As such, Ovum is exclusively committed to producing the absolute best white wines Oregon has to offer from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat. Each wine is produced exactly the same way - if the wine smells or tastes different it has everything to do with the time and place, and little to do with the winemaker. Their hope is that through this minimal handling, and honest technique, they can produce old fashioned wines for the modern world.More from this winery
Are the wines any good? Yes, they are and we taste every wine that is considered for our site. We seek out the best wines from the best small-producers in the U.S. and Winestyr is a collection of our favorites. Most of the wines have impressive accolades, however, don't look for "expert" ratings here - we think it's more important to buy wines you find interesting and to decide for yourself.
