Situated between Santa Barbara and Paso Robles just about 20 miles from the ocean, cooling breezes from the Pacific make their way inland and help the vineyard stay moderated in the late summer heat. Sashi makes this wine with an eye towards the rustic styles of the Old World and as always with this vineyard, time will be rewarded, whether in the cellar or decanter.
Sashi Moorman has become one of the most influential winemakers in the country thanks to his dedication to and pioneering spirit in Santa Barbara County. Along with his other projects (Sandhi and Domaine de la Côte), Piedrasassi's cellar sits in the wine ghetto of Lompoc just down a small driveway down from the tasting room and bread baking storefront.
At Piedrasassi, we enjoy drinking wines from lots of different regions--Burgundy, the Northern Rhône, Beaujolais, the Jura, and Piedmont, to name a few--so it is difficult to pin us down to a specific style we try to emulate. We are continually inspired by the diversity of grapes and wines cultivated in the wide open, relatively uncharted territory that is the California wine industry.
For the Syrah, we focus on cooler climate vineyards, using native yeasts, low sulfur, and stem inclusion at fermentation to give transparency to the wines and to develop wines that have exuberant, lively aromatics.
The common thread among all the wines we love and admire is that there are both a mind and a place behind them. Wine, just like food, or music, or art, should have a certain kind of authenticity--it should come from someone and somewhere. This idea is what informs the work that we do.More from this winery
