This is a micro-production lot from Mikey at Scar of the Sea, sourced from 40-year-old Block Q vines at the famous hillside vineyard of Bien Nacido. Not only are these some of the oldest surviving vines on the Central Coast, the finished wine is an incredible snapshot of what this region can do with the grape.
As if it was fate all along, I somehow kept bumping into the wines over and over again over the course of my career. Mikey launched Scar of the Sea on the idea that Santa Maria Valley, situated between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, offered an extraordinarily diverse and unique terroir. When the brand was introduced in the early 2010s, California was at the height of its reinvention and its wines came to define the kind of balance and expressiveness we now expect from the region's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. In February of 2020, Giugni assumed control over the entirety of the winery's production and the future looks as promising as ever.
