Normally reserved for restaurants, we were giddy when Mikey reached out about offering this wine to our members. Blending fruit from Rancho Sisquoc, Bien Nacido and Rancho Ontiveros Vineyards, this Pinot Noir is an elegant representation of the Santa Maria Valley. The sources are vinified individually with a bit of whole cluster, all native yeasts, and finished in neutral barrel for 10 months. Mikey bottles his wines unfined and unfiltered, offering an incredibly bright, juicy, and transparent look into the terroir of origin. Drink this delightful wine in its youth over the next three to four years. 93pts Robert Parker. 93pts Wine Enthusiast.
As if it was fate all along, I somehow kept bumping into the wines over and over again over the course of my career. Mikey launched Scar of the Sea on the idea that Santa Maria Valley, situated between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, offered an extraordinarily diverse and unique terroir. When the brand was introduced in the early 2010s, California was at the height of its reinvention and its wines came to define the kind of balance and expressiveness we now expect from the region's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah. In February of 2020, Giugni assumed control over the entirety of the winery's production and the future looks as promising as ever.
