What You Should Know About Serving Temperature

Quick Serving Temperature Tips

While glassware, food pairing, and bottle age all play their parts in the experience of enjoying wine, perhaps nothing plays a larger role than serving temperature. Too hot and the wine tastes flabby, too cold and it barely tastes like anything! Not everyone has access to professional wine storage, private home cellars, or high-tech wine refrigerators, so here are a few handy tips to make sure you’re getting the best out of every glass.

How To Beat The Impending Heat

The most important tip is to make sure that while you’re waiting to drink your wines at home that they’re stored in a cool, dark place in your home. Sunlight can easily damage a wine as much as heat can, so if there’s a particularly well insulated closet or back corner of a bedroom where you might be able to stash some bottles, look for that. For your white and sparkling wines, block off a section of your kitchen fridge, but try to drink those wines within the week!

Finding The Right Temperature

If your red wines have been at room temperature for more than a few days, consider throwing them into the fridge for 20 minutes before serving, allowing for the wine to aerate and warm up in your glass. Similarly for white wines of serious complexity, take them out of the fridge 20 minutes before serving to let the aromatics truly unfold. Technically, red wines should be served between 62-68 degrees while white wines should be served between 49-55 degrees, but these quick tips will generally get the job done. When it comes to a backyard barbecue, day on the beach, or a rooftop soiree, fill up the cooler with ice and load it up with your favorite light bodied red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines!
