As part of our Trivia Tuesday series we recently posed this question - How many varieties of wine grapes exist in the world today? The answer surprised me - there are over 10,000 varieties of wine grapes in the world.
Many of these varieties have been developed by using grafting and other methods to produce new hybrids. Often, certain types of grapes are popular in certain countries. These grapes are used to produce wines that are considered representative of those countries or regions. Here's a great list of the most popular wine grapes with brief descriptions of each one.
Does it surprise you to learn that there are more than 10,000 types of wine grapes? It sure threw me for a loop. Cheers!
